In 1964 the Knights of Columbus saw an opportunity to have a council in the White Oak – Groesbeck area.

Organizational meetings were held in St. James School basement, and then in the White Oak Civic Club on Cheviot Road, during the summer of 1964.

Knights of Columbus Supreme Headquarters in New Haven, CT granted a charter to the new council on Nov. 8, 1964. A first Degree was held for the Charter Class Knights and the first election of officers was held. The name La Salle was selected from several proposed names because it was considered that the Council served the same area as La Salle High School.

After many years of involvement in the White Oak community, La Salle bought the old Groesbeck firehouse on Galbraith Road, next to the Public Library.

The Council continued to grow both in membership and community involvement.

In 1983 La Salle Council sponsored a booth at the downtown Cincinnati Oktoberfest featuring Limburger cheese sandwiches and pickled pig’s feet. This proved to be another great success for the Council until 2002 when the Council abandoned its sponsorship.

During this period the Council also conducted a successful weekly Bingo at its hall. Many other activities were held at the hall by outside renters.

Probably the Council’s biggest contribution to the community was in 1990 when La Salle, alone, began the “Taste of Colerain.” The Council took on this event without any experience in this area and made it into a successful event.

The “Taste” was held at the Council grounds for the first five years. After the “Taste” was established, Colerain Township became involved, and the event was moved to the Colerain Township Administration Building grounds on Springdale Road.

For many years La Salle ranked in all activities as one of the top councils in the state of Ohio, most times in the top five.

The Council awards and activities are too numerous to mention, but just a few – the Council began a Colerain Township calendar in 1998 featuring a historical perspective in pictures and words of Ohio’s largest township. Also, the Council commissioned a Colerain Township coverlet featuring historic sights and buildings.

The list goes on and on, and if the next 50 years are as productive as the last 50, the community with La Salle involvement has a tremendous future.

St. Ignatius today is the home of LaSalle Council. We are grateful to the parish and its members for making us welcome.
